A Walking Tour of the Shambles: Little Walks for Sightseers #16 by Gene Wolfe and Neil Gaiman-started 3-28-04 Tapping the Dream Tree by Charles de Lint i'm looking forward to reading the de lint book. Walking Tour of the Shambles is quite amusing so far. It's gotten many a chuckle out of me with lines like this one for the Entry for the House of Clocks: "Pay special attention to the sundials that line the walk as you leave; know that they will be paying special attention to you." or this section from Number Two-and-a-Half B: "To your right is the Chinese-American Burial Temple, the tallest underground structure in the city. Constucted in 1871 to house the remains of Chinese who were refused burial in California (then the site of much anti-Chinese violence), it subterranean location and other safeguards have protected it from the relentless destruction of ethinc neighborhoods. The key beneath the mat is for the convenience of Chinese-American funeral directors. Do not use it, or enter the Chinese-American Burial Temple by other means. For informational purposes only, you should be aware that Chinese ghosts are compounded of human and animal characteristics. Should you meet another sightseer having a tail, hairy ears, or both, be polite but do not accompany him (or her) to any suggested destination unless he (or she) displays a copy of this guidebook and permits you to open it. In general, distrust anyone with teeth sharper than your own. This is good advice throughout Chicago and applies with particular force to members or supposed members of the International Brotherhood of Meatworkers." |
